Five-part epic film saga [1995-2002]
Cremaster 2.
Considered by some as "ultimately the most important American artist of his generation," Matthew Barney became the star du jour thanks to his five-part epic film saga.
The series is utterly original and underpinned by a script which makes use of a highly symbolic language.
Sleekly elegant dirigible stewardesses appear in Cremaster 1 (40 min.); Dazzling ice landscapes and bizarre Gary Gilmore reenactments in Cremaster 2 (79 min.); A Houdini zombie, a racetrack of rotting horses, and Aimee Mullins as the cheetah woman in Cremaster 3 (182 min.); A tap-dancing man-beast and androgynous faeries in Cremaster 4 (42 min.) and in Cremaster 5 the alarming image of Barney's testicles attached to doves by brightly colored ribbons (55 min.).
